Saturday, July 30, saw Foxford once again play host to the Argentinian Ambassador Ms Moira Wilkinson and the crew of the ARA Libertad to celebrate the 245th anniversary of the birth of the founding member of the Argentine Navy, Foxford native Admiral William Brown.
This was a very special day for the people of the town who gathered in force to welcome the special visitors. =The gathered crowd was led in prayer by Argentinian Navy Chaplain, the Irish Navy and their Irish counterparts led by Captain Carlos Schavinsky.
The Foxford brass and Reed Band marched through the town giving a great air of pageantry and a much needed post pandemic lift. The event was further enhanced by music from the The ARA Libertad crew at the Admiral Brown Hall and on the Admiral Brown Promenade.
The invited guests and crew of the ARA Libertad were treated to refreshments in the Admiral Brown Hall in the town and welcomed by Mr Brendan Brett and Fr Padraig Costello. The hall was bedecked in wonderful decorations in the green and red and blue and white colours for the event.
The Admiral Brown Society would like to thank the many people who helped to make this day such a special and meaningful afternoon; Ms Moira Wilkinson and contingency from the Argentine Embassy in Dublin, Mayo County Council staff and members who attended, the wonderful locals who decorated the town, set up the hall and provided refreshments sponsored by O'Hara's Bakery and O'Hara's Centra.
The Society also extends a very special thanks to the crew of the Libertad and the Irish Navy who took time to celebrate with them and to the members of An Garda Siochana who made sure that the event ran smoothly and safely.
Thanks were also expressed to everyone who gathered to welcome the special visitors with the Society adding that The Admiral Brown Society will continue its work in memory of its founder Mr JJ o'Hara, Admiral Brown and Ms Laura Bernal, as it works towards the 250th Anniversary in 2027.
