Shannon search continues for missing man

As of Wednesday, teams from Athlone Sub Aqua are continuing their search of the River Shannon for a missing Athlone man.

The length of the search has now exceeded 30 days. The man in question is understood to be in his 50s and was last seen in The Strand area of Athlone on January 11.

The statement reads: “Athlone Sub-Aqua Club have been searching for a missing person for 32 days to date. Seven days a week the club have been out searching the river and flooded farm lands. The conditions are harsh and there is a large search area to be covered.”

The statement also communicated the difficulties Athlone Sub Aqua are experiencing in their search, including dealing with a large search area which is scattered with hazards both above and below water level.

“Typically the main river channel south of the weir wall ranges from 30m to 50m in width. With the flooded farm lands stretching from Clonown (West ) to Golden Island/Clonbonny (East ), the search area is close to one mile in width in some areas cris-crossed with fencing and other under water hazards. The search continues with surface search teams each morning covering different areas,” the statement concluded.
