Chamber calls for traffic management measures to accompany one-way

Athlone Chamber of Commerce has called for the installation of a Smart Traffic Light system along the changed routes once the one-way traffic system has been introduced in the new year.

The Chamber is also seeking onsite presence of local engineers and representatives of An Garda Síochána to ensure that the traffic flow is managed and any potential issues are resolved quickly following the introduction of the one-way system.

The Chamber has reiterated its support for the enhancement works on Church Street and the town centre, and has also welcomed the commencement of advance works during nighttime hours, which will minimise disruption to businesses and pedestrians in the town.

“The accommodation works are very necessary to address drainage and it is great to see the local authority planning ahead and doing this now,” stated John McGrath, Athlone Chamber president.

“While the Chamber welcomes the renewal and enhancement of the town centre, we are also very conscious of the need to minimise disruption to retailers in the town and ensuring that every effort possible is made to secure an optimum traffic flow following the one-way Introduction.

“With this in mind, we will be lobbying strongly for the installation and use of a Smart Traffic Light system along the changed routes, and are actively seeking the onsite presence of local engineers and representatives from An Garda Síochána to ensure that the traffic flow is managed and any potential bottleneck issues resolved in the weeks immediately following the introduction.

“Close cooperation is needed between all authorities and agencies involved, as well as businesses and residents affected, to ensure that the project is a success. A dedicated team including local traders are meeting regularly to agree operational and communication strategies.”
