Stella Maris nursing home honoured at national awards

An Athlone nursing home team was honoured at the Nursing Homes Ireland Care Awards last week in Dublin, placing among three finalists in the category.

Clare McNally and her team at Stella Marris Nursing Home, Athlone, were finalists in the Nursing Home Community Initiative Award category at the national awards ceremony that took place at Citywest Hotel, Co Dublin, on Thursday, November 16. Clare and her team were one of three finalists within the award category, with the judging panel choosing a Co Galway nursing home as its winner.

More than 400 representatives from the nursing home, older person care and health sectors attended the awards ceremony that was hosted by RTE presenter, Marty Whelan.

Tadhg Daly, Nursing Homes Ireland CEO, extended his congratulations to Clare and the team for reaching the final of the national awards ceremony. He said: “The standard of entry for this year’s awards was exceptional. To reach the final of an award category was a fantastic achievement, and I congratulate our Clare and the team for achieving this. The staff and residents of Stella Marris, and the extended Athlone community, should be very proud of their accomplishment.”

Some 27 finalists from counties and communities across Ireland went forward for nine award categories. They recognise nurses, carers, ancillary workers, activity coordinators, catering in nursing homes, innovation in dementia care, community initiative, and end of life care within the nursing home sector.

A Resident Achievement Award, recognising the positive contribution of residents towards nursing home life, and a Nursing Homes Ireland Lifetime Achievement Award were also presented at the Awards ceremony.

Now in their eighth year, the NHI Care Awards recognise care excellence and staff within nursing homes that are enhancing the lives of persons entrusted in their care.
