O’Brien highlights safety concerns on Ballymore Road

Local Independent councillor, Michael O’Brien, has called on the council to introduce a pedestrian crossing and traffic calming measures on the Ballymore Road in Moate between Sliabh Rua and the railway bridge.

Cllr O’Brien told last Monday’s meeting of the Athlone Municipal District (July 3 ) that people living in the residential area of Sliabh Rua, with 120 houses, are being forced to cross the road to get to a footpath if they wish to walk into town. With many children living in the area, Cllr O’Brien said something needs to be done in the interests of public safety.

He added that when planning permission was granted for these homes during boom times, safety measures should have been put in place, but were not. Cllr O’Brien said he hopes that finance for works can be found.

District engineer, Pat Nally, said the numbers do not stack up to merit the installation of a pedestrian crossing. However, he added that if there is any increase in the discretionary grant next year the council can and will revisit the issue.
