My Fair Lady’s rehearsals come to a close

The intense rehearsals for the cast My Fair Lady are finally coming to a close. After a long rehearsal schedule, which commenced on January 12, the cast feel ready to present this grand and refreshing musical.

A tale of a flower girl Eliza Doolittle who turns into a princess of breeding, at one moment a guttersnipe, and the next a statuesque goddess. Blessed with wide eyes that telegraph her feelings, Paula Short who plays the part of Eliza, is certainly playing a fabulous role, says Joan Larkin PRO for the society.

Another great addition to this year’s front-line is Rory Robinson. Rory hails from Dublin, and has been part of the Balldoyle Musical Society for a number of years. Rory plays the challenging role of the over-confident, middle-aged Professor Higgins. If you closed your eyes you would think it was Rex Harrison speaking says Joan. The society is delighted to have him on board, and hopes he has a memorable time in Athlone.

Opening night is almost upon the cast and crew. But this is a little more special than any other opening night. As a mark of respect to the memory of the late great Edward Farrell. A special tribute will be made during the official opening of My Fair Lady in recognition of his enormous talent, commitment, kindness, and support. The laughter and fun that he gave to the members of the society, and to the audiences alike for many years will never be forgotten.

There are a limited number of spaces for either patrons or sponsors for the opening night gala performance. There will also be a Sunday matinee at 6pm.
