Local councillor Aengus O’Rourke (FF ) has welcomed the potential offered by the newly installed river jetties in Athlone.
There are three floating jetties each approximately 24 feet in length and are accessible by a bridge from the Golden Mile walkway, just beyond the White Bridge. These are not mooring jetties for boats, but instead are designed specifically to accommodate those who wish to fish along this stretch of the River Shannon.
“Completed and open to the public in recent days, the jetties are another great addition to our bank of public amenities in the town,” Cllr O’Rourke said. “Designed to accommodate those who wish to fish the river, the jetties are easily accessible and are designed to accommodate people with disabilities and those in wheelchairs.
“I would like to compliment Inland Fisheries Ireland who funded the jetties. In particular, I would like to thank Oisin Naughton, fisheries inspector with Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI ), and Martin McEnroe, board member of IFI, for their assistance and foresight in delivering this wonderful facility for Athlone.”
