Road to be renamed in honour of Elliot sisters

Grace Road from the White Bridge to Custume Bridge is to be renamed in honour of the Elliot sisters, Emily and Eilís.

The motion was originally raised by Fianna Fáil councillor, Frankie Keena, at December's meeting of the Athlone Municipal District.

A non-statutory public consultation process took place recently but no submissions were received.

As a result, the renaming will go ahead with a ceremony expected to take place in the next three or four weeks.

Councillor Keena said he is pleased to see the motion progress to this stage. He said the tribute to the Elliot sisters was appropriate due to the role they played in the founding of Cumann na Mban and in the Rising.

Sinn Féin councillor, Paul Hogan, commended Cllr Keena for having originally raised the motion. He described the tribute to the Elliot sisters as "fitting" their contribution to Irish nationalism.

District engineer, Pat Nally, said signs will now be made up and could be ready to be installed in the next month.
