Naughten welcomes €2m investment in Custume Barracks

Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Denis Naughten, has welcomed confirmation that a major €2m development project for Custume Barracks in Athlone is currently being progressed.

Minister Naughten secured a commitment on investment in Custume Barracks during the formation of the Government and recently raised the issue once again with the Minister of State with Responsibility for Defence, Paul Kehoe.

“I have been informed that work will include the refurbishment of the existing dining hall with the intention of modernising the facility to meet current standards,” stated Minister Naughten.

Tenders are now being evaluated for the appointment of the design team for the project and it is expected the team will be appointed in the first quarter of 2017.

“This investment is further confirmation that Custume Barracks is an important operational military barracks and is further evidence of the Government’s long-term commitment to the barracks,” added Minister Naughten.
