Psychological Society of Ireland annual conference at the Sheraton Hotel

The Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI ) is to hold its annual conference at the Sheraton Athlone Hotel from November 10 to 12.

The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Who are we: where have we come from and where are we going? - Exploring the psychology of identity’.

There will be a particular focus on the impact of social media and internet usage on society, focusing on issues such as: problematic Facebook usage; online friendships; the negative side of online dating and online romance; the objectification of women on Facebook; the need to regulate the marketing of unhealthy food on social media.

On Thursday, November 10, Peter Saville, professor of psychology at Queens Belfast and Kingston Universities and Fellow of the Institute of Directors, will present ‘There is nothing absolute about this identity of mine’.

On Friday, November 11, professor Ian Robertson, chair in psychology at Trinity College, founding director of Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience (TCIN ) and Fellow of the American Association for Psychological Science, will present ‘The Benefits of Stress’.

On Saturday, November 12, Professor Wendy Hollway, Emeritus professor of psychology at the Open University, Honorary Fellow of the BPS and Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, will present ‘The importance of methods for researching identity’.
