Winners of the ‘Gardens and Estates’, ‘Schools and Businesses’ competitions will receive their prizes at the Annual Athlone Tidy Town awards ceremony, which will take place in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel on Monday, October 10, from 7pm sharp.
The Tidy Towns competition is run annually by Athlone Tidy Towns Committee and is currently sponsored by Westmeath County Council and local businesses.
The awards acknowledge the outstanding efforts put in by people and organisations within the town, which play a significant role in contributing towards the overall Tidy Towns efforts.
The competition aims to encourage and promote householders and businesses to take greater pride and interest in their own business premises, gardens, estates, and surrounding areas.
Athlone Tidy Towns Committee has reported that there has been a noticeable increase in the number of applications received in the ‘Gardens and Estates’ competition this year.
This year’s guest speaker is Athlone native Dr Harman Murtagh. Dr Murtagh is a noted historian and a past president of the Old Athlone Society with a deep interest in our waterways heritage.
