O’Brien welcomes the addition of Retreat/Cartrontroy area to local bus route

Local Independent councillor, Michael O’Brien, has welcomed the news that the Retreat and Cartrontroy areas are to be included in a new local bus route in Athlone town.

Cllr O’Brien had made representations to the Minister for Transport, Deputy Shane Ross, requesting that the Athlone Town Bus Service be extended to the Retreat/Cartrontroy area.

“I’m delighted to announce that the National Transport Authority have been in contact with me with the news that they will include this area in a new network that will be announced in the coming weeks,” Cllr O’Brien said.

“I am delighted with the news that following a detailed examination of bus service provision in Athlone Town, the authority has approved a revised and improved network of the town services provided by Bus Éireann. The revised network, which is planned to be introduced later in the summer, will see frequencies improved and include the provision of regular services to both Cartrontroy and Retreat areas.

“I have received many calls from residents in the Retreat/Cartrontroy area to be included on the town bus route. There are 617 dwelling houses in this area and it’s so close to the current route so it makes sense to have such a highly populated urban area included in the new network.

“Bus Éireann will announce full details of the revised network and the timetables of services prior to implementation. I’d like to thank Minister Ross and Deputy ‘Boxer’ Moran for their assistance with this.”
