Address of recognition for Bishop Smith

“An address of recognition for Bishop Michael Smith on his silver jubilee,” was Cllr Jim Bourke’s unanimously approved proposal at the recent Mullingar Town Council meeting.

The Fianna Fail man said it was important to recognise the “great work in the town” done by the Bishop, especially in sporting and community arenas.

This was echoed by Cllr Glynn who said the Bishop had “the height of respect throughout the town”.

Cllr Dollard referred to the Bishop’s achievements that “brought so much light into the town” and the strong role he had played with Sr Finbar Breslin.

He referred specifically to the setting up of the voluntary housing scheme at Great Oaks and the work done on St Paul’s Church and St Colman’s school on the Delvin Road.

At Monday’s meeting of Westmeath County Council, councillors added their appreciation to Bishop Smith. “He is a very positive man, who has dedicated his life to the service of God and his parishioners,” said Cllr Robert Troy.

Cllr Dan McCarthy added that he had done “an enormous amount of work very quietly and in the background for all sections of the community”.

It was agreed that county councillors would also be involved in the address of recognition. A date will be set in the coming weeks.

A Mass of Thanksgiving is to be held in the Cathedral of Christ the King this Sunday at 3pm to celebrate Bishop Smith’s 25 years as Bishop of the Meath diocese.
