Anti-Irish Water protesters created a stir at Monday’s meeting of Westmeath County Council, when they gathered outside County Buildings to register their anger at proposed moves by the council to transfer its tenants’ details to Irish Water.
The group of protesters were refused entry to the County Buildings in Mullingar where the meeting was taking place, but gathered outside using pots, pans, and whistles to create a racket throughout the duration of the meeting.
Late last year it emerged that the council will be required to hand over the names and addresses of its tenants to Irish Water. However some councillors expressed concerns that such a move would be in breach of data protection, while others felt strongly that tenants should be officially informed of the move.
Westmeath County Council CEO Pat Gallagher said this week there had been no further communication from Irish Water on the transfer of information.
