Engineers Week, the annual campaign to inspire the next generation of engineers and excite students about the possibilities a career in engineering can offer, is taking place in Westmeath and Offaly from Sunday February 8-14.
The week is themed ‘Engineering is for Everyone’, during which there will be hundreds of fun, informative, and educational events happening around the country.
In addition to in-company events, classroom workshops and volunteer visits to schools, local organisations including EirGrid, Offaly County Council, Westmeath County Council, Mergon International, the Defence Forces, The Gateway Project, and many more will be getting involved.
Throughout the week, the Defence Forces at Custume Barracks in Athlone are inviting secondary level junior cycle students to visit the Defence Forces Engineer Company at Custume Barracks where they will learn about the engineering employed by the Defence Forces through presentations, demonstrations, and equipment introductions. This event is free and pre-booking is essential.
The Gateway Youth Project will host two workshops, one for fifth and sixth class primary students and one for second level transition year students in St Mary’s Hall, Athlone. Six qualified engineers from the Midlands area will be on hand to showcase the different types of engineering in Ireland today and the opportunities available to students. The workshops will cover scratch computer programme, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, science of fire/engineering of fire, and more. This event is free and pre-booking is essential.
Engineers Ireland brings the engineering show ‘Who Wants to be a Superhero?’ to the Birr Theatre & Arts Centre. In this show, engineering and science performers bring to life gravity, forces, energy, light, space, the environment, and materials in a fun and exciting way which explain real life applications of engineering in action. This event is on at various times on February 11, it is free but pre-booking is essential as places are limited.
