Car contents targeted in series of break-ins

Car owners are being urged not to leave valuables on show in their cars and to ensure their cars are locked at all times, after a run of break-ins around Athlone.

Most recently, cars were broken into the evening of Monday January 5 outside homes in the Battery Heights and Retreat areas.

The windows of both cars were smashed with a rock or brick, and in both cases valuables which had been left visible in the vehicles were taken.

Athlone Gardaí say that cars left unlocked, and locked cars with valuables left on show, are being targeted.

In a separate incident, a woman had her handbag stolen from her car in the carpark at Dunnes in Irishtown on New Year’s Day.

The woman was sitting in her car when a male stole the bag from the passenger seat beside her. He was dressed in black. Anyone who witnessed this incident is asked to contact Athlone Garda Station on (090 ) 6498550.
