€8,000 funding to Westmeath clubs for older people

Fine Gael TD for Longford/Westmeath, Gabrielle McFadden, has been informed by Minister for Sport Michael Ring that almost €8,000 in funding has been allocated to groups and clubs who cater for older people in Westmeath.

“€7,940 has been allocated to Westmeath under the National Grant Scheme for Sport and Physical Activity for Older People 2014. The monies fund groups and clubs who cater for older people around the country so that they can buy equipment, run sports events, or try new activities,” said Deputy McFadden.

The National Grant Scheme is aimed at increasing participation among older people in recreational sport and physical activity, and is a joint initiative between Age & Opportunity’s Go for Life programme and the Irish Sports Council.

Now in its 14th year, it has awarded over €4.2 million in nearly 10,000 grants to date. The Irish Sports Council allocated more than €600,000 from its 2014 budget to the Go for Life Programme to help increase the participation of older people in recreational sport and physical activity.
