Athlone start-up wins Sustainable Energy Innovation Award

Athlone company OxyMem has been named winner of the Innovation Award for its ‘compelling breakthrough’ technology in wastewater treatment at the 11th annual Sustainable Energy Awards. The Sustainable Energy Awards, which reward excellence in energy management, is hosted by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI ) and sponsored by Electric Ireland.

OxyMem, an indigenous start-up company, has invented a technology that will address the global need for a more energy-efficient aeration solution for wastewater treatment. The traditional approach to the breakdown of bacteria in wastewater treatment is very energy intensive, comprising 2-3 per cent of global electricity production and 60 per cent of the overall energy costs associated with wastewater treatment. The technology invented by OxyMem achieves 99 per cent efficiency in the oxygen transfer required to feed the bacteria and has been heralded as a breakthrough treatment.

This innovative technology is now produced in Athlone, with plans for expansion already in place for 2015.
