Athlone’s Poetry in the Park group have two more accolades to add to their achievements for the year with a launch of another small chapbook collectio
n of poetry in time for Christmas and a visit from TG4.
This weekend, a special Poetry in the Park will take place to give away some of the chapbooks and the group will be meeting on Sunday November 30 at 2pm outside Athlone Castle.
The group will then walk across town - committing random acts of poetry along on the way - ending in Burgess Park with some coffee to warm everyone up!
Then the group will be joined next Sunday by Imeall, TG4’s flagship arts programme who are filming a piece on Poetry in the Park for an upcoming programme. Members welcome anyone who would like to attend the recording.
They will be giving 100 copies of their chapbook away for free next Sunday November 30 and another 200 will be for sale locally; one copy costs €3 or two for €5. Giving some of the books away is part of the group’s commitment to bring poetry to the people, to have poetry as part of everyday life.
This is the second chapbook collection produced by the group, who’ve had an eventful year - winning the All-Ireland Community Arts Award at the UK & Ireland Epic Awards in Glasgow as well as hosting a poetry master-class with award-winning poet Noel Monahan.
The group meets the first Sunday of every month at 2pm near the entrance to Burgess Park and all are welcome to come along and read their own poems, their favourite poems, and to listen.
