A protest march against water charges is to be held in Athlone this Saturday November 1, as part of a series of nationwide protests under the umbrella of the Right2Water campaign.
A meeting was held on Monday evening in St Kieran’s Hall to plan the local protest march, which is being organised by Sinn Féin, anti-austerity campaigners, and other supporters.
The march will start at St Peter’s Square at 2pm on Saturday. It will proceed via Connaught Street, Pearse Street, across the town bridge, through Church Street, John Broderick Street, Golden Island, and Irishtown, before finishing with a rally at the Civic Centre. A number of speakers will address the crowd during the protest.
The organisers are hoping that as many locals as possible from Athlone and surrounding areas will turn out to voice their opposition to water metering and water charges.
This event follows a similar protest held on October 4, which saw hundreds of people march through Athlone in protest at the Government’s introduction of water charges.
