The committee of Athlone Tidy Towns held its annual awards recently at the Sheraton Athlone Hotel.
Speaking at the event PRO of the committee, Peggy Dowling, explained that the ceremony is designed to acknowledge, celebrate, and reward the communities, businesses, and schools in Athlone for the ongoing work they do to improve their local environment.
“The standard increases every year and even in these tough times, it is very impressive to see groups of individuals who still make time to add value to their local communities by taking responsibility for their local environment. We have a lovely town - both east and west of the Shannon,” explained Ms Dowling.
John Butler, chairman of Athlone Tidy Towns committee added that a lot of visitors came to Athlone this summer and have remarked on how well the town looks.
“Athlone has great potential and all the work we put into keeping it looking good will hopefully bring more business to our town and also help us achieve better results in the National Tidy Towns competitions,” he said.
Regular litter clean-ups will be posted on Athlone Tidy Towns’ website, www.athlonetidytowns.ie for anyone who would like to get involved.
