The Irish Pub is a celebration of the greatest institution in Irish society, the pub, or more specifically the pub owners. Athlone Film Club will be starting its new season this September with a documentary on something very dear to us all - the pub.
Athlone Film Club is set to launch its new season next Thursday August 28 at 7pm in Gertie Browne’s pub. Gerties is one of the many pubs to feature in this award-winning documentary.
Speaking ahead of the launch the club chairman John Lally was particularly excited about the local interest in the opening film, The Irish Pub. “We are looking forward to the launch of the new film season and given the local interest, we are delighted that Gerties pub will host the launch of the new season. This is our seventh year in existence and our members have enjoyed over 90 films and documentaries from across the globe, many of which were not seen before and help to enhance our knowledge of the world and stimulate our imagination.”
From September 9 through to February 10, 11 very different films will be shown every second Tuesday at 8pm on the big screen in the Dean Crowe Theatre and Arts Centre. From comedy to classic, from world cinema to contemporary, the club promises an exciting line-up that will appeal to all tastes and ages.
The films this season have something for everyone from Christmas classic Miracle on 34th Street to many new films from across the globe.
The season kicks off on September 9 with The Irish Pub, where audiences will meander across Ireland from Connemara to Carlow, from Monaghan to West Cork, from Louth to Limerick, from conversation to captivating conversation.
Membership is €10 to include your first film. Subsequent films are €8 each. This includes a complimentary wine reception in the Dean Crowe Theatre bar before each film. What better way to spend an autumn or winter evening?
