Westmeath County Council is happy to advise that the temporary prohibition on swimming at Lilliput bathing area was lifted with effect from yesterday afternoon.
Water samples taken at Lilliput show that the water quality has improved and now complies with the standards set down for Bathing Waters.
The HSE has been consulted and has agreed that the temporary prohibition imposed since July 18 can be lifted and the signs prohibiting bathing can be removed.
The temporary ban was put in place last Friday, July 18, after water samples were found to be below acceptable standards, due to a suspected sewage discharge.
Westmeath County Council said that water samples taken on Monday and Tuesday of last week indicated that the water quality, on these dates, did not comply with EU standards. The likely cause was “discharge from an on-site waste water treatment plant”.
