It seems like all we hear about these days is bad news. The environment is on a knife-edge, more and more children are being diagnosed obese, and we seem to be lurching from one food-scare to the next.
What if there were a way to help restore the natural balance, regain a measure of control over the food we eat, get a little gentle exercise, and save money all at the same time?
On Tuesday January 13 a brand-new evening course could show you just that. Starting at 8pm in the new Mullingar Educate Together National School building on the C-Link road, and entitled ‘Grow your own food’, this eight-week course will show you how to turn your garden (or even your window-box! ) into a source of nutritious, healthy fruit and vegetables bursting with flavour. Advance registration for this course is necessary - see below for details.
No experience is necessary - you don’t even need to know the difference between a trowel and a pair of secateurs, as the course will cater to the absolute beginner. The teacher, Anna Browne, designed a garden for Mullingar Educate Together in its previous location on a patch of rubble-strewn waste ground that won a ‘Pride of Place’ award in 2008, and her passion for growing is, to put it mildly, infectious. She has also been featured in The Sunday Times for her online efforts to spread the message about growing at home - you can check out her website for yourself at http://growyourownfood.blogspot.com.
The cost for the course is €95 - very reasonable when you consider you’ll be gaining skills that will literally change your life! For more information or to register for the course, contact Anna on (087 ) 2222562 or by email at [email protected].
