Roscommon sports get €500k cash injection

A local TD has welcomed the allocation of €537,000 to local sporting organisations but added that many other applicants are left without funding due to a failure to maximize the use of the grant scheme.

“I am disappointed that other projects, equally valuable, have not been successful especially when a small bit of novel thinking by Government could have ring-fenced the VAT and taxes generated by the Sports Capital Grant itself and thereby trebled the overall sports fund,” said Denis Naughten.

“Having worked closely with some of the successful clubs, I have no doubt that this funding will be of huge benefit in their local communities,” said the independent TD.

A total of 45 Roscommon clubs submitted applications under the Sports Capital Grant Scheme, with plans to invest over €2.9m in sport and recreational facilities throughout the county, but only 21 of those applications were successful.

While some applications were deemed invalid, many more worthy projects failed to receive funding.

Unsuccessful groups will be written to by the Department within the next fortnight providing them with an assessment of their application.

Westmeath clubs received €574,000.
