Deputy Denis Naughten has welcomed the announcement by the West Northwest Hospitals Group to suspend its controversial review of maternity services in the region.
“This report was flawed right from its inception and I welcome this decision by the West Northwest Hospitals Group,” said Deputy Naughten, who had previously called for the report to be scrapped.
“I previously outlined that I cannot understand how consultants could produce a report that came out so negatively considering that Portiuncula is the safest hospital, one of the most efficient, and the second biggest in the hospital group.
“I am now seeking to ensure that any review which takes place is an independent evaluation of all maternity services across the country. I have no doubt that based on the number of deliveries in Portiuncula Hospital, the quality of care, and the efficiency of the service that it will stand up to any scrutiny.
“However, while we may have won this battle in relation to maternity services at Portiuncula Hospital the war is far from over in relation to the reconfiguration of maternity services across the region.”
