Last night Gardaí in Athlone arrested a fourth male in connection with the death of a man (23 ) whose body was found in the River Shannon in Athlone.
The body of the Polish man, who has not been named by Gardai, was found partially submerged in water in an area known as Bogginfin at about 8.25pm on Friday night, June 20.Gardai launched a murder inquiry yesterday after the discovery.
They are also investigating an assualt in the town which took place on the same day.Three men were arrested on Friday night in connection to the discovery of the body. One man in his 30s remains in Garda custody in Athlone while two men who had been held in Mullingar Garda station were released last night without charge, a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The fourth man, in his 20s, was arrested yesterday evening and is currently being held in Athlone garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
A post mortem was carried out on the body of the 23-year-old yesterday by State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy at University Hospital Galway. No result have been released.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses who may have seen a dark BMW in The Strand/Lloyd’s Lane area of Athlone on Friday evening between 6pm and 8pm to contact them.
They are also seeking information from anyone with information about activity in the Bogganfin area, a popular walkway where the M6 motorway crosses the River Shannon.
They have asked any boat owners or anyone who may have been on a cruiser between 6 and 8pm on Friday night and who may have seen suspecious activity on the Shannon or near Lough Ree to come forward.
Gardaí are also seeking information with regard to another serious assault in the Athlone area on Friday night.
