Parents disability support group to meet in Tyrrellspass

The Westmeath Parents Support Group (WPSG ) is to hold a ‘meet-and-greet’ at Tyrrellspass Castle next Saturday, June 7, from 10am for parents of children with all forms of disabilities.

The WPSG is a group of individuals interested in supporting families and kids of all abilities, needs, and ages, regardless of diagnosis, throughout the county.

“We've been up and running on Facebook since July last year, and many have used the site to meet parents, carers, friends or providers in similar situations. There is so much power in sharing experiences, tips and tricks, or good local finds,” said organiser Carole McGuinness.

”This will be our second ‘meet-and-greet’, and is a free event for adults and children. Tea, coffee and scones are available for free in the marquee, and the castle has three dining rooms where you can choose something bigger if you have travelled,” she added.

Parents can expect to find opportunities to engage in arts and crafts, sensory/messy play, social and educational board games, and fun exercises for practising those tricky academic and fine motor skills.

There is also a floor area with larger sensory and occupational therapy equipment and a quiet sensory area that is screened off from the hustle and bustle.

Local providers will showcase their services and give free advice.

“It’s a great opportunity to meet, greet and give your own opinions on service provision in Westmeath. We hope to increase numbers to be able to offer group training and day trips,” said Carole.

There is also entertainment in the form of local musicians, face painting, mini manicures and attendees are invited to contribute to an art installation project.

This event is completely voluntary, and is run by parents from all over Westmeath including Mullingar, Athlone, Kinnegad, Delvin, and Clonmellon.
