Ericsson to create new jobs in Athlone

Ericsson, the fifth-largest software company in the world, has announced the creation of 120 new jobs between their Athlone and Dublin offices.

Due to the further expansion of their Irish operations, the telecommunications infrastructure giant will now begin recruiting for 120 new positions, to complement the existing workforce of more than 1,400.

Newly elected TD, Gabrielle McFadden, welcomed the announcement. “This is great news for Athlone, and further underlines Ericsson’s commitment to its site in the town. During the by-election campaign, I repeatedly said that jobs for the Midlands were my number one priority. I am delighted with this announcement, which will come as a great boost to Athlone.”

Ericsson is seeking to fill a range of positions in both Dublin and Athlone. The jobs being created are highly skilled roles encompassing software developers, solution architects, consultants and programme managers. A number of these roles are in Ericsson’s recently acquired TV business unit, Mediaroom.

A number of the roles will go to graduates of the Dublin Institute of Technology MSc in Applied Software Technology and the Athlone Institute of Technology MSc in Applied Software Engineering. Both MSc programmes are Ericsson sponsored.

“The Ericsson plant in Athlone has had mixed fortunes in recent years, so it is great to see the workforce once again being expanded. I understand that recruitment is getting underway immediately for the highly skilled roles, which range from software developers to programme managers and consultants,” Deputy McFadden added.

She stressed the importance of having multinational firms based in the Midlands. “Not only is the company a major employer, its presence will help to encourage further international operations to locate in the Midlands as the recovery continues to take hold.”
