Gardaí proved they have a real nose for detection this week when they made a substantial drugs seizure from the scent of the product alone.
According to a senior source at Mullingar station, two gardaí on patrol answered an operational call to an address in Ardleigh Crescent in Grange on Wednesday afternoon (May 21 ) on a separate matter.
When they crossed the threshold on invitation, the highly distinctive odour of cannabis herb was obvious enough to prompt a search of the premises under probable cause.
The officers quickly uncovered half a kilo (c 18oz ) of the proscribed substance, with a street value of approximately €2,000.
Two males - one in his early 20s, and the other a juvenile - were arrested around 4pm, and detained at Mullingar Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
Though released shortly after, a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions, and charges are expected to follow.
This seizure follows a similar find in a different location last week in Mullingar where gardaí confiscated a larger 1.5 kg haul of cannabis, worth in the region of €6,000.
