Luan Gallery is delighted to present the first half of its summer programme for 2014. Featuring the works of Cork artist Catherina Hearne, Athlone native Seán Guinan and Italian collage artist Naomi Vona, this trio of exhibitions come together to drench Luan Gallery in colour for the months of May and June.
Catherina Hearne’s beautiful intricate canvases will fill the New Gallery in her exhibition Essence and Existence. This rich and elaborate body of work includes all the hallmarks of the artist’s practice - complex detailing, layering of surfaces, and an opulent palette. Drawn from sources as diverse as religious iconography, contemporary fashion, and architecture, these paintings present a visual feast of colour.
The Time Travellers by Naomi Vona will be presented in the River Gallery and will consist of scores of collaged vintage postcards showcasing Naomi Vona in her first solo exhibition. This project began in Ireland a year ago when Vona spent several months collecting vintage postcards which she then collaged over to create colourful overlays utterly transforming and reinventing the original images. Colour and shape explode through the nostalgic, two dimensional black and white images giving new life and focus to the discarded, vintage photographs.
Athlone born, painter Seán Guinan will show in the Library Gallery where he will reproduce the ordered chaos of his Limerick studio in an exhibition entitled Meat Option. Sean says, “The settings I create occupy the grey area between abstraction and figuration. Unsure as to what physical state they exist within, they often disintegrate amid confusion, while other times appear strong, expansive, and all-knowing.”
Of the upcoming exhibition Aedín McGinn, manager said, “We are thrilled to be presenting such a lively and colourful selection for May and June. The launch of these exhibitions falls during the RTÉ All Ireland Drama Festival and form part of the fringe. Athlone will be buzzing with all things arts and regardless of weather; we’ll be providing the summer brights.”
Essence and Existence, The Time Travellers, and Meat Option open in Luan Gallery tonight, Friday May 2 at 6pm with a wine reception, all are welcome. The exhibitions will run until June 29.
Luan Gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 11am-5pm and Sunday from 12-5pm, closed on Mondays.
