First-round provincial opener in Mullingar

In a repeat of last year’s Leinster Minor football final, Westmeath will be hoping for a better result when hosting Kildare in tomorrow’s first round provincial opener at Mullingar.

Kildare are highly rated at this level again in 2014, but Tom Carr’s Westmeath panel is well represented with players who made an impact in the Leinster Colleges Senior Championship for Marist College and St Joseph’s Rochfortbridge.

Both Kildare and Westmeath were defeated at the All Ireland quarter stage by Roscommon and Mayo following competitive encounters.

Meanwhile, Westmeath suffered a 3-11 to 1-13 loss to Kildare at Newbridge in the Leinster Minor Hurling Championship on Saturday.

Trailing 2-7 to 1-6 at the interval Westmeath cut the gap to the minimum early in the second half, but a Cathal Melville goal for Kildare sealed the deal.
