Artist talk aims to help understanding of abstract art

Luan Gallery, Athlone will host the second episode of the Ask the Artist talk series with artist Tom Climent, one of the three artists exhibiting until April 27.

Following the success of last month’s artist talk and Q&A with Paul Quast, this episode will bring Tom Climent and his work closer to his Athlone audience.

Emilia Krysztofiak, administrative assistant at Athlone Art and Heritage said: “Many people have trouble understanding and appreciating abstract art. With representational paintings, you get an immediate feeling as to whether or not you like the work. With abstract art there are designs, shapes and colours that do not look like specific physical objects. As such, abstract paintings are a lot harder to understand. For some, to appreciate a work of art, it needs to be seen as more than a single, isolated creation, there must also be context. We feel there is no better way to help develop an understanding and comfort with art than to meet artists in person and ask questions about their life and work. Through participating in and experiencing a discussion, improved access is achieved which helps to further demystify the notion of abstract art.”

The discussion will be led by Carissa Farrell, curator of contemporary visual art and arts manager. Ms Farrell has worked in the Solstice Arts Centre, VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art, and the George Bernard Shaw Theatre in Carlow and has over 18 years of professional experience in the arts sector.

Athlone Community Radio will record the event live and broadcast it on air in their weekly arts show For Arts Sake.

To generate the interest in this discussion Luan Gallery invite the public to send questions for the artist prior to the talk through twitter @AthArtHeritage.

The talk is open to the public, free of charge, with tea and coffee served. Ask the Artist Episode 2 is on Saturday April 26 from 1pm to 2pm. Pre-booking is advised to avoid disappointment.
