A councillor engaged in some good-natured one-upmanship this week in the run-up to the Local Elections when he received a more favourable reply to a question than his opponent.
This little moment of pre-electioneering came to light at this month’s meeting of the Kilbeggan Area Committee during which the €2m roads programme for the area was presented.
Cllr Paul Daly had submitted a question to area engineer Pat Nally in relation to “the very poor condition” of a road at Castlepark in Rochfortbridge, and whether Westmeath County Council could “take some action” on this.
He was delighted when Mr Nally confirmed this stretch of road “is included in the 2014 roads programme”.
“Well, that’s a much better answer than Cllr Corcoran got for question 10,” smiled Cllr Daly.
He was mischieviously referring to a query a few moments previously that his colleague Cllr Ger Corcoran had made in relation to the proposed extension of the footpath on the Mullingar road as far as the pitch and putt club.
However, Cllr Corcoran indicated his disappointment when he was told that had not been deemed a priority and could only be considered for the 2015 budget.
Both Cllrs Daly (FF ) and Corcoran (Lab ) are to contest the Local Elections for their respective parties in the new Mullingar-Kilbeggan electoral area on May 23.
