Columb Barracks to be used as count centre

It has been confirmed that Columb Barracks will be used as the main count centre for this year’s Local and European Elections on May 24.

According to returning officer Bill Coughlan Columb Barracks was the obvious choice for holding the counts. Ballot boxes from across the county will be opened in Mullingar on May 24 with votes being divided out between the three electoral areasbefore the Athlone ballots will be sent back to Athlone to be counted. The European Election ballots will be sent to Castlebar to be counted.

The Local and European Elections will take place on May 23 with counting beginning on May 24. So far there are 13 candidates declared for the Athlone area, 10 in Mullingar-Kilbeggan, and 10 in Mullingar-Coole. There are a total of 20 seats up for grabs in the county.

There is still time for candidates to put their names forward for election. Applications must be received by the county council before close of business on Saturday April 26.
