London calling for county hurlers in league opener

Division 2A of the Allianz Hurling League promises to be competitive so Westmeath will be anxious to make a positive start at Ruislip on Sunday.

Brian Hanley’s side are in an awkward group alongside Derry, Kerry, Kildare, and Carlow, but Westmeath will be quietly confident of making a bold bid for promotion.

DIT shaded a high scoring Walsh Cup encounter with Westmeath on January 12, but that loss led to two valuable matches in the Walsh Shield. Westmeath, who have a good recent history against Antrim, were able to beat the Saffrons comprehensively. Unfortunately Westmeath, who were not at full strength, subsequently fell in the Shield decider to Carlow.

The quarter finals of the Leinster Schools Senior ‘A’ Football Championship are scheduled to take place tomorrow with two Westmeath Colleges involved.

There will be a large crowd at Kiltoom at 1.30pm when Marist, Athlone host a well regarded Wicklow Schools side that has impressed in the competition to date. In Pairc Taillteann at 2pm St Patrick’s Navan host St Joseph’s Rochfortbrige in another intriguing joust.
