Are you interested in biodiversity in Westmeath? Biodiversity which is short for biological diversity, refers to the variety of life we see around us daily, including trees, animals, flowers, insects, birds, plants, micro-organisms, and also people.
Westmeath County Council in association with the Heritage Forum Biodiversity Working Group is holding a public information and fact-gathering day in relation to Westmeath biodiversity on Friday February 21 in the Atrium of Westmeath County Council Offices in Mullingar and on Friday March 14 in the Atrium of Athlone Civic Offices from 10am-4pm each day.
Westmeath has a rich natural heritage which supports our varied, species-rich habitats - wetlands, rivers, woodlands, grasslands, peatlands, eskers, and more. It is planned to produce a biodiversity action plan for Westmeath which will help manage and sustain our natural heritage for future generations.
It is hoped that local communities will be involved in advancing and ensuring the natural heritage of their areas is protected and enhanced. Public interest in all aspects of heritage is evident in Westmeath with the number of schools and local active groups in the county organising and participating in seminars and lectures, in nature walks, clean-up days, tree-planting events, and more.
Members of the public, either individuals or organisations, are welcome to come along on either date and let Westmeath County Council know what they think are important issues in their area or indeed anywhere in Westmeath.
