The importance of shopping in your local community is even more important this year as retailers struggle against the blows struck by austerity and internet shopping, believes Mullingar Chamber president Pat Whelan.
“Shopping locally is more than just supporting local shops. You are supporting your neighbours, your friends, your family. Everyone needs to live in a vibrant and sustainable community, so it is important that when you come into town and buy for Christmas you remember every euro spent is jobs saved, more part-time jobs for young people over the Christmas period, security of income over Christmas, and security of work in the New Year,” he said.
The chamber will launch their voucher campaign today, Friday November 29, which last year helped to keep €80,000 in the local econoamy.
The voucher is available from the chamber officers, Mullingar Credit Union, and the Annebrook House Hotel, and is an important tool used by Mullingar Chamber to promote local business and secure the retail economy.
“It is also tax efficient for employers to pay employees their Christmas bonus by way of the Mullingar Chamber Voucher because it is free of PRSI, PAYE, and Universal Social Charge. So €250 of a voucher is €250 into the hand of the employee to spend in Mullingar,” added Mr Whelan.
