Man is a “martyr for trouble” says judge

Judge Neilan told 20-year-old Andrew Gunning that he was a “martyr for trouble” and would end up in prison if he were not careful.

Mr Gunning pleaded guilty to public order charges arising out of an incident on Austin Friar Street on August 18 at 2.50am.

Garda Keaney told the court he had been on patrol when he observed a number of people in a heated argument. He felt that a row was likely as Mr Gunning was intoxicated and determined to fight.

The garda accepted that Mr Gunning was waiting to be collected and that he had come upon someone on the footpath with whom he’d been involved in a separate incident several months previously.

Imposing a €500 fine, and banning Mr Gunning from all licensed premises in the district, Judge Neilan reminded the defendant that he had a previous alcohol-related conviction from which he had not learned.
