Mullingar’s public car parks will be free for five full days leading up to Christmas.
Director of services David Hogan made the announcement at the Mullingar area meeting this week following a motion by Cllr Peter Burke urging people to shop locally.
Mr Hogan said there will be free parking in council-owned car parks on the weekends of December 7/8 and December 14/15.
Public car parks will also be free from December 20 to 24 inclusive and Mr Hogan said it will show that the council supports business.
Cllr Fintan Cooney described the move as very good and Cllr Davitt said the decision was very proactive and showed the council is listening to businesspeople.
Cllr Burke said retailers are under significant stress and said it’s important that people show support locally in the run-up to Christmas.
