Garrycastle pass test while Shamrocks and Loman’s look good

As expected there were few surprise results in round three of the Westmeath senior football championship which took place last weekend. Bunbrosna’s defeat of Maryland was perhaps the only real ‘upset’.

Reigning champions Mullingar Shamrocks recorded an easy 10-point win over Athlone. In truth this was perhaps the worst performance from an Athlone side in the 18 years I have been involved in the senior team. Credit to Shamrocks who in my opinion are the team to beat this year but they were never tested. They look well placed to top Section A and take one of the semi-final spots. St Loman’s look likely to top Section B and secure the second automatic semi-final spot following their 1-18 to 1-5 win over Killucan.

In Athlone we have no option now but to raise our game in our next outing and show that we are not as poor as this display would suggest.

Garrycastle edged out Tyrrellspass by a single point in a high-scoring and hard fought encounter. Tyrrellspass will feel they left it behind but credit to Garrycastle for digging out a win.

Bunbrosna had two points to spare in the end over a below-par Maryland to keep things wide open in Section A. As expected The Downs had a comfortable win over struggling C/F/C/W. Castledaly had a valuable two-point win over Coralstown/Kinnegad to edge them closer to a quarter-final spot.

The next round of games is scheduled for the weekend of August 17/18.
