State owned Irish Water has announced the opening of a new regional office in Mullingar.

Irish Water is tasked with collecting water charges, and along with Mullingar there will be seven other offices opened across the country. A variety of roles will be available including operation and maintenance, capital planning, and HSQE (Health Safety Quality & Environment ).

Speaking after the announcent Deputy Willie Penrose said it was a good news day for Mullingar.

“This office will be very significant, dealing with the Eastern and Midland region (along with the Dublin office ). It will support water services including waste, maintenance, capital planning, and of course water charges,” he said.

Water charges are not expected to come into effect until January 2015, however jobs in the new Irish Water office in Mullingar are expected to go online soon.

“People should check www.irishwater.ie, I think jobs will be online now. There are jobs available through the Department of the Environment, Bord Gáis, and open recruitment, so there is plenty of opportunity for everyone,” said Deputy Penrose.

Also speaking after the announcement, fellow Longford/Westmeath TD James Bannon said, “The establishment of this office in Mullingar will help to increase efficiencies and create greater economies of scale in the provision of water services, while ensuring that Irish Water is close to its customers.”

“These regional offices will help to increase efficiencies and create greater economies of scale in the provision of water services, while ensuring that Irish Water working with local authorities remains close to its customers,” added Minister for the Environment, Community & Local Government, Phil Hogan.

Further information on these roles will be available in due course on Irish Water’s website www.water.ie, which will be launched today, Friday July 26.
