Lakeside road to be blocked to prevent illegal dumping

A section of lakeside road which has been subjected to high levels of dumping in recent weeks is to be closed to traffic.

Some 600m of the L11371 at Butlers Bridge, Mullingar is to be blocked off in order to prevent people driving their cars in to dump rubbish in the area.

The 600m stretch of road will now be accessible to pedestrians only, after councillors commenced the process at Monday’s Mullingar Area meeting.

The council’s director of services David Hogan said it was a “high amenity area” which is part of the proposed ‘greenway’ cycleway, but had been subjected to “extensive illegal dumping”.

The change to the road’s status was proposed by Cllr Ken Glynn, who said he was outraged at the recent behaviour of the “small minority causing this action”, and seconded by Cllr Detty Cornally.
