Swimming is prohibited in Lough Ennell’s bathing areas for the foreseeable future, following the discovery of blue green algae in the water.
Westmeath County Council issued a notice yesterday, Thursday, saying it is now prohibiting swimming, and also prohibiting dogs and other animals from entering the water in all bathing areas around Lough Ennell.
It followed a notice issued on Tuesday saying the council was imposing bathing restrictions after significant levels of blue green algae were detected in Lough Ennell.
The blue green algae can cause skin irritation, has the potential to become toxic, and can be dangerous to both humans and animals.
The Environmental Protection Agency has been advised, the council is erecting signage, and the situation is being constantly monitored. The council will remove the bathing water restriction when it is safe to do so.
