For the third year running Roscommon’s involvement in the All-Ireland championship has been ended by Tyrone. Yet this is a game both sides will talk about for quite some time to come as Tyrone just about did enough to see off a spirited Roscommon challenge.
This was expected to be a formality with anything other than a comfortable win for Mickey Harte’s men out of the question. John Evan’s side hadn’t read the script however. But for some wayward shooting in the closing stages a shock win could have materialised.
Roscommon adopted an ultra defensive approach to the game so not surprisingly it was a low scoring affair. Conor Devanney gave the home support plenty to cheer about on 29 minutes when he got the game’s only goal to put the home side three points ahead. The visitors levelled matters by the break.
Tyrone carved out a six-point lead during the second half but Roscommon weren’t in the mood to surrender. Four unanswered points left just two points between the sides. A succession of missed chances then proved very costly and Tyrone were mighty relieved to hang on for a two-point win.
