Graham Whittaker from Athlone will compete in Ireland’s only round-the-clock race on July 19 and 20 in Belfast.
The Energia 24-Hour Race which will be held in the new-look eight-lane Mary Peters track in Belfast which has been awarded Irish Championship status by Athletics Ireland, is one of the most exacting challenges on the Irish sporting calendar.
Speaking ahead of the race, race director Ed Smith said, “We expect over 50 runners representing seven countries and some 15 Irish counties to take part in the 2013 race including the two-time Irish champion and the Irish track 24-hour record holder. The current men’s 24-hour Irish track record of 147 miles (236kms ) is held by Eoin Keith while the women’s record of 113 miles (181kms ) was set by Deirdre Finn in 2011. There is a £250 bonus this summer for anyone who breaks the records, in addition to a £500 bonus to the man and woman that goes the furthest and a £100 bonus for anyone who breaks the current record”.
