A man has appeared before Mullingar District Court facing a number of charges relating to the care of animals in Mullingar.
Seán Glynn of Ballyogan More, Tubber, Co Clare, who appeared on behalf of himself and his older brother Pat (58 ), is accused of allowing animals to wander on lands at Irishtown, Mullingar on February 10 this year.
Mr Glynn is also facing charges of cruelty to animals, permitting carcasses to remain unburied and of allowing animals to wander, and failing to ensure the welfare of between 30 and 84 cattle in his possession.
Judge Neilan warned him unreservedly that “should any concerns be expressed to me regarding the welfare of any animal in your control, I will order forthwith for them all to be removed to the nearest abbattoir to be slaughtered forthwith.”
He also expressed concerns regarding the safety of motorists at this time of the year. “The weather changes by the hour, and it’s impossible for a motorist to see any beast wandering on the road.”
“You have an obligation in law to have sufficient fencing on every square inch of land, to ensure that animals are well foddered and fed at this time of the year or they will trespass and forage for food in other places. This is a serious business,” he added.
Mr Glynn, who owns 300 acres of land, said that he had not sought legal assistance though he had received his summons in August, because he had gott hurt during the summer in a farm accident. He asked Robert Marren to represent him and the case will appear before the court again on January 15 for mention.
