Christian Brother in court over alleged indecent assualt

A 65-year-old man has appeared before Mullingar District Court on Thursday February 21, charged with indecently assaulting two boys at a Mullingar school 18 years ago.

Brother Thomas McCarry, with an address at Clareville, Finglas Road, Glasnevin, Dublin faces 18 charges relating to offences alleged to have been committed at the CBS primary school in Mullingar 1984 and 1985.

Ten charges relate to one boy, and a further eight charges relate to a second alleged victim.

Detective Garda Eric Naughton gave evidence of arresting Br McCarry in Finglas, Dublin on Wednesday February 20.

When Brother Thomas McCarry was charged later on Wednesday evening (February 20 ), Brother McCarry replied “No comment” to each of the charges.

Detective Garda Naughton said the charges are before the court following a three year investigation.

Brother McCarry didn’t speak during the brief hearing.

He was remanded on bail to appear before Mullingar District Court again on April 11 when a book of evidence is due to be served.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that the case be sent forward to the Circuit Court.

Judge Seamus Hughes ordered Brother McCarry to sign on each Sunday at Mountjoy Garda Station and prohibited him from having any direct or indirect contact with the alleged victims.

He is also to inform the Gardaí of the dates he will leave and return from his annual foreign holiday.
