Leinster A colleges round-up

There are two important games of local interest down for decision today (Friday ) in the Leinster Senior A colleges football championship with a place in the last eight up for grabs. An all-Westmeath clash takes place when St Mary’s Mullingar welcome Marist College to town. Marist College will be fancied to progress but nothing can be taken for granted in this competition.

Moate CS will be firmly in the underdogs corner when they make the long journey to Navan to take on a fancied St Pat’s side. While the Moate side would not appear to be as strong as last year’s side they are sure to give account of themselves and it’s not beyond the bounds of possibility that they would cause an upset.

Earlier this week Athlone Community College booked their place in the last eight with a 1-8 to 0-4 win over Salesian, Celbridge. It was far from a convincing performance from the Athlone based side who will need to show considerable improvement if they are to maximise their undoubted potential. Yet they will be happy to be in the hat when the quarter final draw takes place tonight (Friday ).

Indeed it has been a good week for Gaelic football in the Community College with the u16 team qualifying for the North Leinster A final thanks to a 3-5 to 1-8 win over neighbours Marist College. They now face a fancied St Joseph’s Rochfordbridge side in the decider which is fixed for next Thursday.

St Joseph’s Rochfordbridge seniors exited the competition when they lost 3-10 to 0-4 to Knockbeg College on Wednesday last.
