Leinster senior A colleges round-up

Sixteen teams remain in contention in the Leinster senior A colleges championship ahead of round 2 which is due to take place next Wednesday January 23.

Athlone Community College face a tricky away fixture to Salesian Cellbridge, a side managed by Garrycastle’s number one Cathal Mullin. Last year the Athlone side needed a late goal to grab a one-point win so they will be taking nothing for granted.

Moate CS could be seen to have drawn the short straw once again with an away tie with St Pat’s Navan. Peter Tormey and JP Casey’s side have been improving in recent weeks and enjoyed a comfortable win over Dublin-based side St Benildus in their opening round. Away to St Pat’s is undoubtedly the draw most would want to avoid but Athlone Community College showed in the league semi-final that the famed Meath nursery can be beaten on their own patch. The Moate boys are sure to at least go close.

Marist College travel to Mullingar to take on St Mary’s in the only all-Westmeath clash. Both sides will fancy their chances in this one but from what I have seen I would expect Marist to progress.

Luke Dempsey will be in familiar territory when he takes his St Joseph’s Rochfordbridge side to Knockbeg College, Carlow. Reigning All-Ireland champions Edenderry should have too much firepower for Portmarnock CS.
